United States Army Aviation Museum

The U.S. Army Aviation Museum features approximately 70,000 square feet of exhibit space including those displayed outside on the museum's grounds. The collection contains research efforts, developments in rotary wing technology and the timeline of the helicopter. The public galleries are a representation of the army's involvement in the military from the earlier days with the Wright brothers. The galleries include about 50 aircraft displays, over 160 airplanes, helicopters and other vertical flight aircraft. Come learn about what makes this museum so unique while staying at our cabin.

Exhibits

The majority of the exhibits are a collection of helicopters and airplanes that have been restored and trace the development of aviation by the Army. Many exhibits were made to honor those who sacrificed their lives for this country. The U.S. Army Aviation Museum Vietnam Memorial attests to the 4,347 Army Aviation personnel who fought during the Vietnam Conflict. The Army Aviation Hall of Fame gives recognition to those whose achievements and contributions have impacted army aviation.

When the Army Aviation Museum was officially established on April 17, 1956, there were no clear Army regulations for the funding or organization of a museum. The museum was able to function through the hard work and dedication of senior aviation officers who, for over ten years, added aircraft and memorabilia to the museum. The doors were formally opened to the public on November 26, 1968 after the museum had been relocated. Over 130,000 visitors had been welcomed in the first year of operation. Since then, the museum continues to increasingly expand and grow with the collection of historical artifacts and aircraft.

The Aviation Museum is much more than just helicopters it is the story of Army Aviation and its importance to the military. The staff is exceptional and really gives a great tour. The aircraft have been restored to mint condition. While truly worth a visit for those interested in military and American history, the whole family will enjoy. Aircraft, uniform, and technology displays pique the interest of visitors and provide awe-inspiring and humbling information. History comes alive as you take in the various and varied aircraft. Uniforms and technology may have changed but it is obvious that the commitment to serve has not. In addition to information on a few key individuals who served, there are dismantled display aircraft for the next generation of pilots and their families to sit in. There truly is something for everyone here and it is well worth a visit.

My husband, two adult daughters and I visited my nephew on his Family Day. What an amazing time we had to learn about helicopters. We were quite impressed! The museum also has a great gift shop!
